Joe Bahnatka owns Record Storage Solutions, Inc., a record storage business based in Rhinebeck, New York. His daughter, who earned a degree in library science, suggested they enter the shredding business, which would serve as an additional revenue generator and extension of their current business. Bahnatka took to the idea and ran with it.

About a year and a half ago he purchased a generator truck that had a shredder in the back. Although it did the job, he found that using it was very labor intensive and time consuming as it had to be hand fed and bagged. As Record Storage Solution’s client base grew, Bahnatka realized the company had to have a quality mobile shredder to increase efficiency and better service its customers.

After attending an industry conference and speaking with others Bahnatka learned about Shred-Tech. Shred-Tech provided him with the information he needed to select a mobile shredding unit that best fit his needs, including customer references and industry information. Bahnatka purchased Shred-Tech’s MDS-35 GT in September 2007.

Since extending Record Storage Solutions’ business by adding the shredding component, four employees have been dedicated to handling the company’s shredding function. Bahnatka is now considering hiring a full-time driver and another staff member to handle the shredding portion of the business. Currently, the company operates the shredding unit approximately three days a week and is continually attracting new business through customer referrals and marketing tactics (e.g. newspaper advertising). The majority of its customers include accounting firms and insurance companies.

In most cases, Record Storage Solutions visits its customers monthly or weekly to empty containers and shred documents, which are then taken to recycling centers. The company also get calls for “purge jobs” in which several hundred boxes of paper need to be shredded. Most recently, Record Storage Solutions’ mobile shredding unit visited a large accounting firm and shredded 800 boxes of private and confidential documents, which amounted to more than 19 tons of paper
